6 Old School Pool Games to Teach Your Kids

May 01, 2021

Summer is almost here! You can already picture lazy summer days by the pool. Your kids are in swimsuits with sunscreen on, and you settle in on your lounge chair to watch them play. As soon as you make yourself comfortable, the kids are asking what game they should play in the pool. Here are six old school pool games you can suggest to them.

Marco Polo

This classic game is about moving quickly and staying out of the reach of the person who is “it.” The person who is “it” stands in the center of the pool with their eyes closed and calls out “Marco,” while the remaining players scatter throughout the pool and respond with “Polo.” As the person who is “it” hears the responses, they quickly move toward the sounds and try to tag them. Whoever gets tagged is the new Marco!

Sharks and Minnows

Sharks and minnows is a variation of tag. One player is the shark in the middle of the pool while the minnows start at one end of the pool. When someone shouts “go,” they move as quickly as possible to get across the pool without being tagged by the shark. Whoever gets tagged first is now “it.”

Noodle Joust

Teens and adults will love this game! All you need are two pool rafts and pool noodles. Players sit on their individual rafts and use pool noodles to “joust” with one another. The goal is to knock the other player into the water using the pool noodle. The last person left on the raft is the winner!

Wishing Well

Wishing Well is perfect for younger kids and teens alike as they go underwater to collect “treasure.”

Have all players stand with their backs to the pool. Meanwhile, you take a handful of coins into the water. The players can jump into the pool and dive down to retrieve the coins. You can choose to let them keep what they find as a prize or collect them and toss them back for another round of searching!

Red Light, Green Light

For this game you are the judge. All of the kids start at one end of the pool. At various points you call out “green light,” and they move as far across the pool as possible. Once you call out “red light,” they stop until you tell them it’s time to move again. The first person to touch the other side of the pool is the winner.

Much like H.O.R.S.E. on the basketball court, one person is the leader who the other players follow. The leader chooses to do a choreographed move in the water or a jump with a twist from the side of the pool. Whatever they choose, the other players must match it or they receive a letter from F.I.S.H. Whoever spells the entire word first loses the game.
