The Ultimate Guide to Designing Your Backyard around Your Pool

Apr 30, 2021

So you have a stunning new swimming pool, and now the rest of your backyard looks kind of plain. You need to jazz it up to match your pool, but how? Should you add some landscaping? What about some other water features? Do you need somewhere to sit near the pool? There are just so many options, and you don’t know how you could ever choose. It’s okay. We’re here to help you with the ultimate guide to designing your backyard around your pool.

Choosing Landscaping

The first thought you probably had about designing your backyard around your pool is to add some landscaping. Adding landscaping to your backyard is a great idea, but you want to make sure what you choose is ideal for your pool. As you probably can imagine, your pool is kind of picky about what can be around it, and with that large of an investment, you want to protect it.

If you’re looking to add landscaping around your pool yourself, be sure to do some research on pool-safe landscaping options. For example, there are some plants that you don’t want around your pool, like trees with fruit or large roots. If fruit falls from the trees, it can damage your pool, and so can roots if they get too close to your pool shell. While you may notice damage from the fruit immediately, it’ll likely take you longer to notice any root damage. So, stay on the safe side and stay away from large trees — or at least keep them somewhat far from your pool. This way you can still get some shade and privacy from the trees, but you don’t have to worry as much about damage or debris.

To make the best landscaping choices for your backyard pool, however, we recommend hiring a professional landscaper. While this will cost more than doing it yourself, the landscaper will be knowledgeable on the types of plants and placement that is best for your pool. Ask your local pool builder to help you find a great landscaper.

A Place to Gather

Once you have your pool and landscaping all set, you may realize your backyard is still missing something: a place for everyone to hang out outside of the pool. Those old lawn chairs just aren’t going to cut it any more.

You have a lot of options when it comes to adding gathering places to your backyard. You can add some patio furniture, benches, lounge chairs, or even a pool house. While this isn’t necessary to enjoy your pool, it gives you a place to spend time with friends and family outside of the pool, and your pool house can even double as a guest house! Plus, you’ll have somewhere to dry off so you’re not getting water all throughout the indoors of your home.

When you originally selected your pool, you chose what color you wanted your pool to be. Use that as an inspiration when choosing your gathering place. Did you get a nice, dark Blue Azurite pool? Try getting some white lounge chairs with dark blue cushions or pillows. What about the popular Blue Agate color? Pair it with some silver patio furniture and a blue umbrella. Your options are as endless as your imagination.

More Fun In the Sun

Are landscaping and a gathering place not enough to complete your backyard? If you have the space, the budget, and the ultimate guide to designing your backyard around your pool, anything is possible.

Have you ever heard of a splash deck? A splash deck is a small, shallow pool that is perfect for kids. The water on a splash deck is shallow depth, so they can splash around and play all day! However, a splash deck isn’t only great for kids. Adults love them, too! Our Harmony splash decks fit up to 8 adults at a time. It’s a great little area for adults who want to sit in the water, but don’t want to get all the way into the main pool.

Are hot tubs more your speed? You can add one of those to your backyard, too. But, don’t get one from a big box store. Our Neptune spa is almost 3-feet deep and is perfect for any backyard. It is made with the same fiberglass formula as our fiberglass pools, which means it is highly durable and benefits from our proprietary gelcoat and laminate construction.

Still not enough for you? Turn your backyard into a private water park! You can use things you already have lying around your house to do this, like water balloons and a table for snacks. Or, you can go out and get some new stuff specifically for your pool! Accessories like pool inflatables or water features can truly make your backyard feel like a private water park.
